What the Dental Implant Procedure Involves
To begin, you will need to determine your options with your team
of doctors. It will then be decided if you are a candidate for the
implants. A complete dental and medical history will need to be
taken, as well as x-rays and a oral examination. If you are a good
candidate, the procedure is as follows:
1. Placement of the implant or implants into the bone. This is often
done employing local anesthesia along with conscious sedation. Following
surgery there is a healing time of about 6-12 weeks. During this
time, the implants fuse to the bone by a process referred to as
osseointegration.
2. The abutment is secured to the implant. This is a quick procedure
and does not usually need anesthesia. The purpose of the abutment
is to facilitate the attachment of the appropriate replacement tooth
or teeth.
3. The restorative dentist takes impressions and then make an artificial
tooth that will be secured to the implants. Once finished, your
mouth and smile will have natural looking beauty and functionality.
