How is the dental implant placed?
A dental implant must be surgically placed into the jawbone
on an outpatient basis in a dental office usually. No overnight
hospital stay is necessary.
Anesthesia in the form of local or general is used to make you comfortable
during surgery. You will be given instructions about eating and
drinking before surgery. If you use general anesthesia, you will
need to make arrangement regarding having a way to get home after
the surgery procedure.
Here is how the surgery progresses: Your gum is cut to reveal the
bone. A hole is drilled into the bone where the dental implant cylinder
is to be placed. The deeply planted implant cylinder serves as the
root of the tooth and the top of it sits level with your gum line.
Upon securing the cylinder, stitches are used to close your gums
over the cylinder. A temporary and removable denture or crown is
placed on top of the implant area.
