Dental Implants
Dental implants are often an appropriate and great option if you
are missing one or more teeth. Dental implants are considered more
comfortable, efficient and secure than dentures or bridges.
Are you a good candidate for dental implants?
People often think that dental implants are the same as artificial
teeth. This is not exactly true. Implants are actually the threaded
metal cylinders that act as the roots and foundation of missing
teeth. The implant (also known as a post or cylinder) is surgically
placed in the jawbone under the gum. Then an abutment is secured
on top of the metal cylinder and covers it. Finally, a crown is
attached onto the abutment. If you have more than one implant, this
process is followed for each tooth.
The majority of adults with missing teeth are good candidates for
dental implants. Your general dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon
or periodontist can determine if dental implants appropriate for
you.
Dental implants may be a good solution for you personally if you:
- Have one
or more missing teeth
- Have a jawbone
that is not too thin and is fully grown
- Have good
overall oral health
- Have good
health in general
- Don't like
dentures or bridges
- Are ready
and willing to commit several months to the process
- Have the
budget needed to afford them since they can be expensive
